An order picker or orderpicker is defined as an individual or a bit of kit to pick and deliver material needed for filling orders from storage. The machine referred to as an orderpicker is an electrical lift truck specifically designed for filling individual customer orders which require piece-part or case picking, instead of full pallets or unit loads. Orderpickers are used at elevations above the second level of racking during a warehouse or distribution center. They can reach heights up to 390″ Orderpickers are typically powered by 24- or 36-volt industrial batteries.
Orderpickers are going to be utilized in applications where pallet trucks, rolling ladders, and other piece-picking methods are traditionally used. Their versatile design allows for handling of a spread of things, starting from small items, like individual auto parts or drugs, to larger bulky items like bicycles, furniture or even mufflers. Faster travel, lift and lower speeds reduce order picking time, the foremost labor intensive handling function. Their maneuverability in very narrow aisles and high level “picking capabilities” enables the customer to require full advantage of limited space for storing.
Picking cases or single items from racks during a warehouse is that the only job an order picker, a single-purpose lift truck, does. The order picker operator stands on a platform and moves up with the mast, unlike most lift trucks. This piece of kit can access heights of anywhere between 9 feet and 35 feet.
Order pickers are available two types: mid-level and high-level:
• Mid-level order pickers allow an operator to select cases or items from a height of 15 feet to 25 feet. They have a lift capacity of about 3,000 pounds. Usually, these lift trucks are free roaming, but are often found out for wire or rail guidance. They are meant to work in narrow aisles.
• High-level order pickers enable an operator to select cases or items from 20 feet to 35 feet. As with mid-level order pickers, high-level order pickers also have a load capacity of 3,000 pounds. These lift trucks add a narrower aisle than mid-level order pickers and are wire or rail guided.
Wire guiding or rail guiding order pickers means the lift truck can operate in an aisle as narrow as 54 inches. Wire or rail guiding helps the operator to specialize in the task on hand: picking orders and their locations. This also helps with increasing space within the warehouse storage system. Order pickers work best in warehouses that operate for library archival storage, retail applications and furniture picking. Furniture picking features a very specific order picker that has a bigger platform for more ease and productivity when moving bulky and odd-sized loads.
An order picker is an appropriate lift truck for any operation that deals with many SKUs and not plenty of quantity of any particular SKU number. The order picker isn't fitted to tasks such as: unit load picking, or right angle stacking, and transportation for long travel distances.
Order pickers fit into many various sorts of warehouse operation processes. These processes include
1. Batch picking,
2. Spacing and
3. Slotting.
• Batch picking: is employed when inventory must be pulled for multiple orders at just one occasion. These orders are combined. This, in turn, increases productivity by reducing the number of trips needed to one area of a warehouse to pull product. Batch picking can reduce time period and thus labor costs.
• Spacing: the method of putting most trafficked goods in several aisles for fewer congestion of order pickers and better optimization of travel – the foremost costly factor of order picking.
• Slotting: the method to arrange products during a warehouse to assist optimize order picking.
